Dr Who Theme on 8 floppy drives

Submitted by on May 11, 2012 – 9:10 am No Comment

MrSolidSnake745 has put together eight floppy drives, an Arduino, some cabling, a computer and software created by Sammy1Am to make something incredible – the stepper motors from eight floppy drives playing the Dr Who theme!

Basically, the idea is to make the stepper motor produce a frequency by stepping it back and forth at a speed which creates a pitch. Those pitches are all arranged together to produce the music.

Check out the video:

Sammy’s code converts the MIDI file into data and sends them to a Arduino Duemilanove, which then sends the appropriate channel/floppy drive the information.

You can make your own musical drive by following the howto here.

If you want to support him you can also buy the track for a mere $1 here.
