The rebirth of ReBirth

Submitted by on May 11, 2010 – 1:58 pm 3 Comments

The ReBirth software studio by Propellerhead was huge when it came out in 1997. It was a super cheap PC program that faithfully recreated a Roland TR-808, a Roland TR-909 and two Roland TB-303 Computer Controlled Bassline synths. Basically, it was a dream techno studio in a box.

Propellerhead have now launched ReBirth as an iphone application, a new app that recreates the original software and adds a few more goodies for only $6.99.

From Propellerhead:

ReBirth for the iPhone may be small and ever so cutesy looking, but it’s no toy, believe it. With a fully featured song mode and advanced copying and pasting capabilities, ReBirth is a fully featured iPhone music software product that lets you arrange and compose full tracks for saving to your iPhone. You can even share your songs with other ReBirth users – one single click will upload your composition to the ReBirth server, allowing other users to enjoy your music in their iPhones.

Here’s the feature set:

  • 2 x TB-303 Bassline synths
  • TR-808 Drum Machine
  • TR-909 Drum Machine
  • Pattern Controlled Filter
  • Distortion unit
  • Compressor
  • Mixer
  • 5 user mods
  • Pattern sequencing
  • Full automation
  • Combine patterns to build songs
  • Share songs with other ReBirth users

As soon as I saw it in my app list, it was a complete no-brainer to grab it. Here’s my 2 word review:

Buy it.

For 7 bucks, I got one of the best synth/drum machine apps available, the ability to fully automate every knob and parameter, and the classic rubbery sound of the original is fully intact. I can`t tell you how much fun it is to use. My only beef is that the virtual knobs are a bit tricky to use sometimes.
