Free software makes any music swing, including Metallica
From the “this is just so cool everyone needs to see this” files, Tristan Jehan attended the San Francisco Music Hack Day on May 15 & 16th, and showed the world his Python app that can make any music swing.
Swinger.py can take any audio file and give it a swung 16th note feel. Check it on Around the World by Daft Punk:
Very cool, isn’t it? Here’s Metallica’s Enter Sandman, with the same effect:
To be perfectly honest, I think I like the Metallica better in the swung version. And of course we’re waiting for Lars to come knocking. Here are a few more…
Aerosmith’s Dream On:
And finally Guns ‘n Roses Sweet Child O’ Mine:
Pretty cool app, isn’t it? Oh, and did we mention it’s FREE? You can grab it right here.
If you download the app and use it to swing somwthing interesting, throw it in our dropbox.

But how is it used?
You have to download Python to run the script (search for ActivePython if you’re on Windows. If you’re on Linux you probably already have it. Don’t know about Macs, sorry).. After you download and install Python, you’ll need to download the module/API that allows you to run swinger.py. The API is right here: http://code.google.com/p/echo-nest-remix/ Finally, you can download the script linked in the article and you should be able to run it (you’ll have to do this from the command line, as Python doesn’t use a graphical interface by default). Hope this helps.
OK, thanks. Will try that.
So awesome. It’s too bad that this software does all the processing on an online server… That’s the main thing that keeps me from getting into it.
I thought the synth umbrella was cool, but I’d have to wait for it to rain to write a song with it. Think I’ll stick to Reason 4, and Pro Tools, with the odd bit of guitar thrown in.
The synth cakes looked tasty.

Adelaide.
why make a python prgram to do this, when ableton can do it already?
also, these results are ok. bit too much degradation for me.
i dont understand how ableton can do it
