World’s Largest Record Collection
Paul Mawhinney has set the record for building the largest vinyl record collection. The collection of vintage music is made up of approximately 1.5 million singles and a million full albums. Believe it or not, the oldest flat record in the collection dates back to 1881.
The Library of Congress has assessed Paul’s collection, which is over 70% dated between the years of 1948 and 1966. Over 80% of the collection is not available to the listening general public. Its sad to know that so much music is almost lost and that these music recordings cannot be obtained from anywhere else in the world.
Paul Mawhinney accumulated these records when he worked as a salesman for one of the local paper companies. Over the years, Paul got to buy a number of vinyl records and became an avid music collector. He was able to intermingled with several other music collectors and exchanged for records that he did not already have in his music collection.
The selling price for the entire Record Archive was $3 million, even though it has been valued at over $50 million. Paul specifically compared old vinyl music records to new music recordings as depressing as the quality is so much more rich with vinyl.
